With new guests arriving in the afternoon and the excitement Marka experienced in the morning where the herd of buffalo chased off thereon pride as they tried to make a kill, we were all excited to head out. Andries from a neighboring lodge had already followed up on the lion and relocated them just east of De Luca Access. The lion were slowly trailing a large buffalo herd. It was incredibly tricky terrain - rocky, thick mopane and loads of broken termite mounds.

As the lions crossed a steep drainage line, I tried to follow. However, with 9 people on my car, it just dropped; the towbar stuck at the back and my one tyre clean off the ground. It was quite something as while Jacky and myself packed rocks under the tyre, the lions began calling and we knew they were just on the otherside (no more than 50m!). Lucky, having just had new tyros put on my vehicle, the second there was a bit of contact the traction pulled us right out - a very exciting start to the drive. Herold and Diff however, thought this was the funniest thing and have been laughing at me since - I don't think I am going to live this one down anytime soon!

We continued with the lion for a while longer and then left them to spend a bit of time with the buffalo herd they were so desperately trying to follow. The buffalo were understandably a little on edge but we were still able to sit and view them in the evening sun, with Fork-tailed Drongo's swooping down to pick off the insects disturbed in the grass by the wandering buffalo.

A buffalo with a very sore looking eye

We headed down to Lover's Leap for drinks and the rest of drive was very quiet except for a large raiding party of Matabele ants blocking the road!
