Daily Synopsis

Sorry for having been so quiet the last few days, but being in Joburg and Grant still being on leave, not much to write about!!!  Sounds like the lion and rhino viewing has been really good, especially in the north – Shaddy has seen the young Jacaranda lionesses, the three Sohebele male lions and even a pride of six lions near the Kruger Boundary yesterday – not having seen them or pictures, I would guess that rather than being a new pride, it is in fact most likely the three Mahlathini males with the three Timbavati females – although it does beg the question of where their four cubs are?

No leopard sightings have been reported to me, so I’m not sure if they have been hiding well, but sure this afternoon should produce some sightings!

  1. What has happened to the mothers of the two young Jacaranda lionessess and their brother?

  2. The one mother got badly injured by hyenas and was in an extremely poor condition, emaciated and living in the camp area of the adjoining reserve, Ingwelala, so they decided to euthanize her...

the other mother seems to have joined with the mahlathini males in the north? i have seen photos of a very old lioness hanging around with them, and can only assume it is her, as it is definitely not one of the timbavati pride lionesses....as for the young male? he was seen with one of the young females in april, but now he has disappeared and it is the two sisters together again....but they look to be doing very well for such young lions on their own!
